NICHOLAS RAY
(1911-1979)
He studied architecture before working for the radio. Then theatre actor, he started cinema in 1948 at RKO, the real laboratory of young authors, with They live by night. Ray was interested in the depiction of weak, hurt and neurotic characters. Those vulnerable heroes are recurrent in his work and reached a climax in Rebel without a cause.
He realised chefs-d’oeuvre like Johnny Guitar (1954) or Party Girl (1958). In 1960, he turned to super productions and went from failure to failure.
You can’t go home again, made with his students of New York, announced a new style. His last film was co-made with Wim Wenders who paid him a tribute while he was sapped by cancer.
