PAUL GRIMAULT
(1905-1994)
He started his career by shooting reality and then, at 25, he made commercials. In 1936, with Jacques Prévert, he made his first short film. He created the animation studio ‘Les Gémeaux’. From 1947, Jacques Prévert wrote all his scripts. In 1950, Paul Grimault and Jacques Prévert got the feature length film The shepherdess and the chimneysweeper started, adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s tale. Paul Grimault disagreed with the studio and resigned before the end of the production but the film went out on the screen. Then, he created the studio ‘Paul Grimault’s films’ and made many short films. After he had gotten back The shepherdess and the chimneysweeper negative, he reworked on it and in 1979, presented the king and the mocking bird.

The kingdom of Takicardie quakes under the rule of the tyrannical King Charles V and III make VIII and VIII make XVI. A cheerful and talkative bird, whose nest is on the top of the huge castle, near the king’s secret apartments, is the only one that dares to scoff at him. The king likes arts. He also loves the young shepherdess who is near a young chimneysweeper in the painting hung in his royal room. They are in love and they have to escape from the king who pursues them with his moustached henchmen. Finally, the shepherdess and the chimneysweeper take refuge in the lower part of the town thanks to the bird and after a tremendous chase; unfortunately, they are being caught.
