Michel Ocelot was born on the Cte dAzur and grew up in Guinea. He returned to France to study art. He first studied at the Beaux-Arts school in Rouen, and then went on to the Ecole Nationale Suprieure des Arts Dcoratifs in Paris, before finishing at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles.
He directed short animated films with friends, trying out various techniques and has to his credit nearly thirty short films and series for cinema and television, which have been awarded prizes throughout the world. |
He was elected president of the ASIFA the International Animated Film Association in 1994, a position he held for 6 years.
In 1998 he achieved fame with the African tale Kirikou and the Sorceress, his first feature-length film to meet with great success. This public recognition paved the way for the screen release of Princes and Princesses, a collection of old tales in silhouette.
2005 marked the return of the little African hero in Kirikou and the Wild Beasts, co-signed with Bénédicte Galup.
His new feature-length film, Azur and Asmar is a tale about immigration in a Magreb / Andalusian, medieval setting.

Once upon a time, there were two children who were fed and rocked to sleep by the same nanny: Azur, blond and blue-eyed, son of the lord of the castle, and Asmar, dark-skinned and black-eyed, the nurses child. Brought up like brothers, the children are suddenly torn apart. But Azur, haunted by the legend of the Djinn the nanny used to tell him, intends to find it in lands beyond the seas. When they grow up, the two foster brothers each go separate ways in search of the fairy. Daring rivals, they find magic lands full of dangers and enchantments. |

Tiny Kirikou was born in an African village over which a sorceress, Karaba, has cast a terrible spell the spring has dried out, the men have been kidnapped and disappear mysteriously. She eats them claim the villagers.
Karaba is a stunning and cruel woman, surrounded by submissive and formidable fetiches. But Kirikou, who has only just left his mothers womb, wants to free the village from its evil hold and discover the secret of her wickedness. |

Series of six tales in silhouette.
Two creative and inquisitive children meet up every evening in a disused cinema and, with the help of an old technician, they invent stories and play out the plots of which they are the heroes - The Diamond Princess, The Fig Boy, The Witch, The Old Ladys Coat, The Cruel Queen, Prince and Princess.
I show how to find ideas, how to gather information so that things sound right, how to hold a pencil and settle down to work. Because I believe there is one thing that is even more enthralling than watching films. And that is making them. Michel Ocelot. |
