Discovering animated film workshops |
For this new edition, pride of place has been given to the little known form of cinema - animated film. The Du Grain Dmoudre association has invited artists and teachers from
La Mnagerie* to introduce us to all aspects of animated film during a series of workshops, open to all, young and old.
*La Mnagerie is a group of artists and technicians who share a passion for animated film (directors, cartoonists, directors of photography, film editors, etc.).
What exactly is animated film?
Just a quick reminder animation breathes life (or soul, from the Latin anima) into inanimate objects. Animated film technique consists of taking images one by one, then scrolling them at 25 images per second to obtain a video sequence (or 24 for the cinema). This cinematographic process is still in use today despite the fact that it dates back over a century.

This interactive show is an invitation to take part in the directing of short, humorous, animated sequences.
Come and discover the different techniques of animated film, including pixilation the animation of real people and objects image by image. La Mnagerie shamelessly reveals the secrets of shooting, explaining how to painlessly poke a leek into your ear, transform into a superhero, disappear with a wave of a magic wand and discover substitution shots! You will then be able to follow the filming process, the various stages of handling, and the animations evolution, live on a large screen. With The Schmurtz, youll learn while having fun.

Optical games
This workshop provides an introduction to the history of animated film, tracing the forerunners of the cinematograph: thaumatropes, zoetropes, praxinoscopes etc. It is an instructive and entertaining starting point.
age 5 up.
Animation using models
with Cyril Maddalena, animated film instructor and director of photography.
Discover animation using modelling clay as used in the famous Wallace and Gromit films. The participants will think up short sequences and will then have the opportunity to create their objects and characters, learning construction techniques. They will then film a short story, discovering the animation image by image and the specificity that modelling clay affords (transformations, disappearances etc.). Participants will also have the opportunity to discover the techniques of cut paper.

Pixilation
with Marc Mnager, director and animated film instructor
Pixilation is the animation of real people, image by image. During this workshop, participants will have fun directing humorous sequences, experimenting with all possible special effects and tricks of the trade (appearances, disappearances, transformations etc). They will discover how to painlessly stuff a leek into their ear or how to take off into the air like a fairy!

Scraping on film
With director Benot Bonnnemaison-Fitte
How can you create an animation from bobbins of old films or transparencies? In this workshop, working directly on the film, participants will direct their sequence using this technique tested out by Canadian Norman Mc Laren.

Cartoon

What is a light table or an animation stand? Participants will have a chance to discover this technique traditionally (without computer), which is the dream of many. They will direct short animated loops by drawing their own characters, by hand, thus discovering the decomposition of movement and expression.

Workshop on Screenplay writing on the theme of the travel

presented by the Du Grain Dmoudre association and
the winners of the screenplay competition.
With the help of the screenplay competition winners, we will learn the rules of writing specifically for screenplays. This workshop could be the beginning of an on-going screenplay-writing project, throughout the year on the theme of the Absurd.
